MOIMÊME
“Elegy” was a short lived experiment using a ring modulator and some editing.

(Poster for “The Shapes Prior To The Sound” exhibit. The flyer read: “The exhibit presents a proposal for the syntax of sound, shown as a series of graphic schemes. These shapes work as an auxiliary language which anticipates the act of composing and can be denominated as ‘pre-sheet music’. The intention is to highlight the process and not the finally produced sound. In a way, the current experiment is related to the final composition as geometry is related to architecture, where the relationship is not immediate. The track playing in the CD serves as a sonorous example of that research.” AM)

SECONDA PRATTICA
“Seconda Prattica” is a new improvisation ensemble dedicated to the exploration of electro-acoustic instruments. The group spans a wide range of music that begins with ‘near silence’ and ends with the abstract expressionism of their electronic and acoustic distortions.
Unfortunately, due to technical reasons, only a small excerpt from the first improvisation was captured on tape.

POTLATCH
Potlatch is a brand new adventure spiritually mentored by veteran ‘object manipulator’ Monsieur Trinité. This was the group’s second live performance with the addition of quest artist Nuno Reis. The ‘post-free-acid-funk’ ensemble grooved itself throughout the night playing two sets in the small and intimate club overlooking the Tagus River as well as the City of Lisbon. The size of the hall did not allow for a very convenient microphone placement but apart from the technical difficulties Freemusic has decide to post the full event, ENJOY!

HIPNOTICA
Sometime around 2005 Hipnotica where invited to a live radio program entitled ‘Hora do Lobo’ [The Wolf’s Hour] hosted by the all-time radio veteran Antonio Sérgio. At some point throughout the interview the band was challenged to play a totally improvised piece that would be broadcast live, along with the rest of the show. This is the final excerpt. For some unknown reason an alarm went off in the studio during the performance.

Although the fife and drum combination is commonly associated with the American civil war it probably derives from an ancient African tradition. No matter what the origins may be the idea here was to strip the music to the bare minimum, essentially only retaining it’s rhythm.

THE DUDES
As defined in the new Penguin English Dictionary a dude is a city dweller, one from the east coast (USA), holidaying on a ranch in the west coast. But no matter how you define ‘dudeness’ that quality was vividly materialized in the character portrayed by Jeff Bridges in ‘The Big Lebowski’. With the same spirit in mind The Dudes are a working band that leaves the city of Lisbon and heads west to the town of Sintra nearly every Saturday night to jam at Miguel Mira’s place. The sessions usually start after dinner, around 10:00 and frequently last till 3, 4 or even 5 a.m. There are very few breaks and a group of friends is usually close by listening. On this particular night the earth decided to interpose itself between the sun and the moon giving us a very pronounced total lunar eclipse. The cosmic effect somehow seemed to permeate into the music.

ABDUL MOIMÊME
Vision of Vishnu is a guitar solo where the possibilities offered by the Fender Stratocaster are exploited as much as possible. The track has neither overdubs nor electronic effects. The drone sounds and the whole canopy of harmonic are entirely archived through the guitars resources. The improvisation tries to capture the spirit of the Indian ragas, slowly developing its mood with a sparse choice of notes. The treble sound imitates the timbre of the santoor, a stringed instrument played with metallic mallets.

AUSAR-SAHU / GALISSA
Fanta captures the world premier of an outstanding duet that, on its very first date, left the public absolutely amazed. Having their origins on both sides of the Atlantic, these two masters contributed with their versions of African culture, forming a totally new blend of music. Although Rachiim Ausar-Sahu comes from Brooklyn (NY) and Ibrahim Galissa from Guine-Bissau in western Africa, the rapport between both musicians left a marked impression on their very first audience. Its amazing that they had just met two days before the concert.

Before departing on a spiritual quest of Odyssean proportions to the Southern Atlantic Ocean, Miguel Martins came up with the following musical line up. The Salão Brasil (as in Brazilian ballroom) was a wonderful space borrowed by the Jazz ao Centro Clube (JACC), the jazz club responsible for a really magnificent festival, to hold after hour jam sessions. With Michäel Attias as ‘master of ceremonies’ and leader of the house’s opening trio, various members of the groups playing at the festival, as well as local musicians, gather for informal and practically all night long jam sessions. The party went on for three consecutive nights with RUC, the local radio station, broadcasting every minute of the exhilarating event LIVE! The speed with which the musicians on stage would rotate makes it now difficult to know who was who when?

LISLE ELLIS
Lisle Ellis, although hardly from the Lisbon scene, has played in town sufficiently to be an important part of the city’s musical life. He is currently working on a new CD, to be released sometime at the beginning of next year. Here are two excerpts that will give you a taste of what will surely be a smoking disk. The work will be entitled ‘Sucker Punch Requiem’ - a series of compositions inspired by the life and work of Jean Michel Basquiat.

THE CRACK
The Crack is a music collective inspired by Aldous Huxley’s book ‘The Doors of Perception’ to explore the outer perimeter of universal consciousness through music. At the Mexe Café this ambitious endeavour was seriously compromised by a rowdy crowd of inattentive youths. Consequently the group was forces to explore the outer limits of human patience. Certainly age and generation had nothing to do with it as The Crack’s violoncello player is 18. The extenuating circumstances forced to band to push its’ sound hard and heavy thus changing radically its’ aesthetic bearings.

If you have already visited Jon Raskin’s site you will have noticed some very beautiful graphic compositions, which are actually conceptual music charts. Teresa Huerta approaches that kind of sensitivity but from a different angle. There must be a common vibe between the European and American west coasts!
